About Us
Service Civil International (SCI) is a volunteer organisation dedicated to promoting a culture of peace by organising international voluntary projects for people of all ages and backgrounds. SCI is open to all and it has no political or religious affiliation.
We hope that the ‘civilian service’, developing gradually on an international basis, will contribute to turning our foreign neighbours into friends.
Pierre Cérésole, SCI founder

We are independent!
We are not a religious organisation and we are not affiliated with any political party.

We are activists!
We are promoting a culture of peace by organising international volunteering projects and peace education.

We are different!
Most of our projects are very hands-on, and bring people from different backgrounds together to promote peace, solidarity and understanding.

We are many!
Every year, thousands of volunteers participate in our projects. We are happy that you become one of them with this course!

SCI has been promoting volunteering for peace since 1920, when it was founded by Pierre Cérésole in the aftermath of World War I.
Our expertise lies in hands-on community-based volunteering and non-formal education activities. Over the years, we gathered a wealth of knowledge and experience that we have been sharing through our international training courses and publications. Now we wanted to make learning even more accessible with an online learning platform that is free and self-paced.
We hope you enjoy!
Volunteering for Peace since 1920
Service Civil International (SCI) is a volunteer organisation dedicated to promoting a culture of peace by organising international voluntary projects for people of all ages and backgrounds.
SCI was founded by Pierre Cérésole in the aftermath of World War I in 1920. 2020 marked the 100 year anniversary of SCI.
The organisation consists of 42 branches and an ever growing number of partner organisations.
SCI is open to all. It was one of the first organisations to divest itself of all political or religious affiliations in its work of promoting peace and intercultural understanding through practical action. Throughout the years SCI has made a major contribution to the development of the main forms of volunteering. Year after year, the organisation enables thousands of volunteers to participate in community projects.
