The Mercator projection is a cylindrical map projection presented by Flemish geographer and cartographer Gerardus Mercator in 1569. Europe was disproportionately displayed as bigger than it was. In the new map below, you can see how much bigger Africa is in reality, as compared to the Mercator projection.
