How to facilitate an educational activity

Inclusivity

Consider inclusivity such as the use of pronouns, or disabled accessibility.  Allow the group come up with basic rules and respect for the session. Click on ‘Material’ for a toolkit on creating a safe space.

Debates are good

Peace education doesn’t mean that everything is harmonic. Being able to disagree and debate is a positive as long as it is constructive or can be de-escalated.

Trigger warnings

If talking about violence, it is good to specify before showing graphic images or covering topics which might be traumatic for survivors of abuse or war. Participants can choose whether to participate.

Check bias

When planning an educational activity, reflect on how your upbringing, your privilege, your race, gender and class influence the way you think about the issues in your activity.

8 things you need to know when you organise an educational activity

Structure

Consider the pace and which methods to use. Introduce yourself and let the group get to know each other, set out the activity and its importance. End with a debrief, a discussion, and  evaluation.

Take breaks

Give yourself and the group a break! Allowing information to settle aids learning. Try to include snacks or drinks during the break.

Reflection

During activities, it is valuable to let people consider how this relates to their life, experiences/context. Learning has a bigger impact when it is relevant.

Extra time

Try not to overload activities. Discussions and debriefing might take more time than anticipated. Remember – quality is better than quantity!

Do!

Create a structure for an educational activity such as a workshop or a training that you would like to organise! Pick a topic that you are passionate about and make a description of different parts of the activity. Think of the learning outcomes you want to have with your activity and write them down as well, taking the following guidance into account. Write down your ideas in the comments below!

INCLUSION AND NON-VIOLENT COMMUNICATION IN THE DIGITAL FIELD
1. show respect and tolerance in one’s exchanges
2. understand the complexity of what communication entails
3. take a stand when values, mentalities, identities, lives are being attacked

Every motivational lecture requires an understanding of the audience, culture and their expectations, time frame must be well calculated and the topic must be on point to draw the attention of the listeners

Every educational activity must be systematically arranged and the audience must be understood well. For instance, facilitating an educational activity on pollution requires the facilitator to take into account such things as the aim and target audience; allocated time; group size; method and communication aids; definition of pollution and its main types; its impact on humans and culture, other living organisms, and the natural environment; prevention measures; debrief and conclusion. And one has to create an enabling environment to free questions
