The Mercator projection is a cylindrical map projection presented by Flemish geographer and cartographer Gerardus Mercator in 1569. Europe was disproportionately displayed as bigger than it was. In the new map below, you can see how much bigger Africa is in reality, as compared to the Mercator projection.

It goes to show how those in power are the ones that make the maps. Hopefully all this is under scrutiny by modern geographers. The world map is in this way to show interdependence and interconnectivity and reliance of all countries and that no country can sustain itself without others
North (included Russia) to big, South to small. Like the power.
It reflects a vision of Occident seeing itself as the center of the world. It reflects the centralization of the political and economical power.
