3.1 OUR BRAIN

Without the categorisation process, our brain would be like a messy attic. We need “boxes” to store concepts, meanings and knowledge.

 

However, this process has disadvantages, too.  

As we saw in the introductory video, by categorising people and behaviours we risk perceiving the world in a distorted and simplified way. The problems arise when we misuse or abuse the categorisation process, and we tend to place an “object” in the wrong “box”.  Often, we keep on using the same labels even if they do not correspond to the diversity and complexity of the world around us.
