3.14 WHITE SAVIOR COMPLEX

Expression coined by the Nigerian-American writer Teju Cole. It refers to people from the Global North who feel called to “help” the Global South in development, education or aid work. This well-intended “white savior” motivation usually takes place without addressing the background of dominant cultures and without being aware of the historically rooted global power relations and injustices that lie behind this motivation. Ultimately, this leads to the reproduction stereotypes and reinforcement of an inferior, pitiful image of societies in the Global South.
