3.12 STEREOTYPES AND ETHICAL COMMUNICATION

The video that you have just watched shows how easy it is to fall into the trap of stereotypes in the field of cross-cultural volunteering. As we saw in previous videos of this module, volunteers from the Global North might have a simplistic and stereotyped idea of what it means taking part in a voluntary project in the Global South. The cause of this approach can be: 

too idealistic approaches towards volunteering, usually based on unrealistic expectations, prejudices and misconceptions;  

lack of preparation received from the sending organisation;

inputs received from organisations and agencies which stress the element of “white saviorism” and “voluntourism” of their projects, in order to attract more volunteers.
